Whether you are buying a new home that needs to be remodeled or you are looking to spruce up your existing home, home improvement can turn into a big investment – an investment that many people are not emotionally or fiscally prepared for. Yet, with a little creativity and DIY know-how – and maybe a little resourcefulness – you can make the necessary improvements you need without breaking the bank. Home improvements are not only beneficial to raise your quality of life, they can also raise the property value of your home. Here are five ways to save a bundle on costly home improvements.

  1. Head to the store yourself. Many times, a contractor will charge fees for materials – not only for buying them, but also for heading to the store to get them. However, if you need things like paint and even appliances, you can usually find them yourself and for much cheaper. Not only that, but you can also work out better deals with retailers, or you can go online to find materials and supplies for almost half the cost that you would be paying in a big chain store.
  2. Reuse and recycle. If you have old materials in your home, you can always improve them instead of purchasing new materials. For instance, if you have old wood flooring, you can always sand them down, refinish them and then apply a new stain. Voila – you have a brand new floor. When it comes down to it, you want to invest more in things like appliances that can save you energy and money in the long run. When it comes to making home improvements, it is always important to have a macro perspective and to delegate your budget where it is most needed.
  3. Do improvements yourself instead of hiring a contractor. Things like painting your walls and refinishing surfaces can easily be done with a few friends or family members, and you will save a bundle. Whether you are looking for real estate in Raleigh or Seattle, chances are you will find a home that will need a new paint job. Instead of risking paying more for the home, simply do most of the improvements yourself.
  4. Stay organized. Mainly, this means you should always keep your budget in check. Going over budget is one of the number one ways to spend a fortune on home improvements. However, by carefully constructing a budget and going over any contingencies, you can effectively save a lot of money. Also, make sure to pad your budget. Chances are you will need a new can of paint and some brushes – or any number of other supplies.
  5. Rebates will save you a bundle. When you are purchasing supplies and equipment, always look for rebates. You can save hundreds of dollars on upgrades and improvements to your home by getting items, like overhead fans and air conditioning systems, with attractive rebate offers. Just make sure, though, that you actually send in the rebate or else you won’t benefit from the offers.
