Moving home can be a stressful transition. Usually we move to bigger and brighter pastures; to a family home or even the first place of your own. From old and familiar surroundings to a new street and a new home you’d be forgiven for forgetting where you live. Let a professional removal company do the heavy lifting for you so you can concentrate on the important things like: changing address at the bank, school, the post office, gas, electricity, DLVA, TV licence, internet, subscriptions, mobile…

NB Always check the accreditation for your removal company!

Packing

While we do suggest hiring a removal company to lug about all the heavy items, packing your own boxes will make unloading at your new residence far easier. Some small organisational steps will help to stream line the packing process.
Listing will help to keep order and control; use a computer to process a clear and concise list of possessions with blank boxes to add-in forgotten about or supplementary items. Colour co-ordinating for the different rooms of the house will help you to remember what goes where and in what box. When unloading, the boxes can be carried straight into the corresponding room; Simples!

It might also be a good idea to create a space for your organisational tools. Box cutters, lists and removal company details should either be kept with other sensitive documents or deserve a place of their own.

When arranging your move with your chosen removal company try to keep in regular contact and update them with any critical details. For those of us who live on narrow or awkward streets – let the company know in the first instance. Bath removals companies for instance have had to take some creative steps regarding access and clearing their customer’s homes due to the Roman topography of the city.

When a Door Closes a Window Opens

Some larger furishings, such as; sofas, wardrobes and American style Fridge Freezers, may not fit through the average English door frame. Owners of older properties may find the squeeze tighter still due to smaller door frames. If you find yourself struggling to move something of value, and you don’t have the time or resources to remove the door frame, consider going out the window.
Miniature cranes, which can be hired from as little as £250, can move those possesions that you can’t live without but can’t move by conventional means.

Insure Yourself Against Breakages

For those moving further afield, moving insurance is essential. While domestic move insurance is available you should be fine as long as you have properly packed your boxes and are moving with an accredited removal company. Those moving overseas should get a range of quotes from reputable insurance companies. Remember: while your preferred insurance broker might not provide move insurance their underwriter(s) might: so ask to speak to a sales person or senior customer service representative. Your possesions are valuable regardless of their worth, make sure the insurer knows this.

Use these 3 basic principals and go trawling for other articles on the internet. When you’ve amassed enough information use those ideas to make your move as fluid as possible.

Good luck and God speed!
